Edges, funnels & transitions, explained.

An edge is anywhere two habitat types meet - timber against field, brush against open woods, a fence cutting a pasture - and a funnel is anywhere that meeting squeezes travel into a narrow lane. The 6 features here are the workhorses of stand placement: funnels and pinch points, clearcut regrowth, fence crossings, inside field corners, staging areas and the transition lines that run inside the timber. They suit hunters who pick a spot and let game come to them, and most are readable straight off an aerial photo, which makes them the natural starting point for anyone new to scouting. The honest trade-off: edges are obvious, so on pressured ground the corner that draws deer draws every other hunter too - and much of the movement on open edges happens in the last minutes of light.
