Identification & Appearance

Tsessebe are reddish-brown with a glossy purplish sheen on the shoulders, a long face, dark leg patches, and simple ridged crescent horns in both sexes. They have the hartebeest's high-shouldered build in a sleeker form.

Range & Habitat

They occupy open savanna and floodplain grassland in Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and northern South Africa, favoring wide country near water.

Behavior & Sign

Tsessebe are sharp-eyed, fast and wary, posting sentinels and outrunning most pursuit. Sign includes grazed grass, dung middens and tracks on open ground.
