Overview
The waterbuck is a large, shaggy antelope known for its long forward-curving horns and the distinctive white "toilet-seat" ring on its rump. Tough, water-loving and handsome, a big bull is a classic plains-game trophy.
Identification & Appearance
Waterbuck are gray-brown and coarse-coated with a white throat patch, a white ring around the rump, and heavily ridged, forward-sweeping horns on bulls only. They carry an oily, musky coat that waterproofs them.
Range & Habitat
As the name suggests they are never far from water, occupying reedbeds, riverine grassland and floodplain across eastern and southern Africa.
Behavior & Sign
Bulls hold territories near water and cows move in small herds; they are alert and quick to reach the safety of reeds or river. Sign centers on water - tracks, wallows and grazing along the banks.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted on the dry-season plains-game calendar, roughly April through October, with animals concentrated along shrinking water.
Hunting Methods
Spot-and-stalk along rivers and floodplains, glassing for a heavy-horned bull and closing through cover to the water's edge.
Gear & Optics
Waterbuck are notably tough; a .30 caliber and up with premium bullets is recommended. Binoculars and sticks help judge horn length and mass.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Place the bullet firmly on the shoulder into the heart-lung area and expect a hardy animal. Handle the cape carefully; the horns and mane make an imposing mount.
Meat & Eating Quality
The meat is often described as coarse and musky from the oily coat, so it is usually reserved for staff or bait rather than the table.
Common Mistakes
Undergunning a deceptively tough animal and letting a wounded bull reach deep water or reeds.
Regulations & Conservation
Hunted under standard plains-game quotas; confirm import rules. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
FAQ
Is the meat good? It is musky and usually not the reason people hunt them; the trophy is the draw.
Where do you find them? Always near rivers and floodplains.
