The vaal rhebok, or grey rhebok, is a woolly-coated mountain antelope of the high plateaus of South Africa, widely considered one of the most challenging plains-game hunts for its wary nature and rugged terrain. A good ram is a hard-earned mountain trophy.

Identification & Appearance

Vaal rhebok have a soft, woolly grayish-brown coat, a long neck, large ears, and straight, upright, spike-like horns on rams only. The fuzzy grey coat and vertical horns are unmistakable.

Range & Habitat

They occupy high grassy plateaus, mountain slopes and rocky ridges in South Africa and Lesotho, favoring cold, open high country.

Behavior & Sign

Vaal rhebok live in small family groups on the high slopes, are extremely wary and sharp-eyed, and bounce away with a rocking gait and a snorting alarm. Sign includes tracks and dung on the ridges.
