Overview
The warthog is one of the most popular plains-game animals in Africa - abundant, fun to hunt, and a favorite of both rifle and bowhunters. Boars carry curved ivory tusks and a comically ugly warted face that makes them a coveted trophy.
Identification & Appearance
Warthogs are gray, sparsely haired pigs with a long mane, facial "warts," and upward-curving tusks. Boars are larger with prominent tusks and heavier warts; the whole family trots with tails held straight up like antennas.
Range & Habitat
They occupy savanna, grassland and open woodland across sub-Saharan Africa, favoring areas near water, wallows and old aardvark burrows they use for shelter.
Behavior & Sign
Warthogs feed on their knees in the open by day and bolt tail-up to burrows when alarmed, entering rear-first to face any threat with their tusks. Sign includes rooted ground, wallows and burrow entrances.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
As plains game they are hunted on the dry-season safari calendar, roughly April through October, with midday feeding in the open making them one of the more visible species.
Hunting Methods
Spot-and-stalk and waterhole or wallow ambushes both work well; boars are also commonly taken from blinds over water. Judge the tusks carefully before the shot.
Gear & Optics
A medium plains-game rifle in .270, 7mm or .30 caliber with a good expanding bullet is plenty. Bring binoculars, shooting sticks and patience for judging tusk length.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Broadside, aim tight behind the shoulder into the lungs; warthogs are small-vitaled and can be tough. Trackers handle recovery and caping - the skull and tusks make the classic European mount.
Meat & Eating Quality
Warthog is genuinely excellent - lean, mild pork-like meat that is a camp favorite grilled or in stews. It is one of the better-eating plains-game animals.
Common Mistakes
Rushing the tusk judgment, aiming too far back on a small target, and shooting a sow by mistake are the common errors.
Regulations & Conservation
Warthogs are plentiful and hunted under standard plains-game licensing through outfitters. Confirm quotas and import rules for tusks and skulls. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
