Versatile (HPR) dogs
HPR stands for hunt, point, retrieve - and the versatile breeds do all three, on fur and feather, land and water. The six dogs here, from the German Shorthaired Pointer to the Braque Francais, were bred on the continental European model: one dog that points your rooster in October, fetches your ducks in November and works a blood track in December. They suit the hunter who genuinely does a bit of everything and can only keep one dog. The trade-off is that versatility is bought at the edges: a Lab will out-swim them in icy big water and a specialist pointer will outrun them on the prairie. If your hunting is one thing done hard, buy the specialist; if it is five things, start here.
