Steenbok

Overview

The steenbok is a small, bright rufous antelope of open country, common across southern Africa and often taken as a miniature trophy on a plains-game safari. It gets nearly all its water from its food, which lets it live at the edge of the Kalahari as easily as in open woodland. Quick and secretive, it rewards sharp glassing and a steady shot.

Identification & Appearance

Steenbok look like a small oribi: fawn to rufous, usually rather orange, with a white underside, chin and throat and a white ring around the eye. The ears are large, the nose glossy black with a black bridge above it, and there is a black crescent between the ears. Only rams have horns - straight, smooth and parallel. The tail is so short it is rarely seen.

Range & Habitat

There are two separate populations: one in East Africa, in central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, and a much larger one across southern Africa (Wikipedia, "Steenbok"). They use everything from semi-desert to open woodland and thicket - open plains, stony savanna and acacia-grassland mosaics.

Behavior & Sign

Steenbok are browsers that feed on low plants and scrape up roots and tubers, and they are active by day and by night, resting in shade through the heat. At the first sign of trouble one lies flat in the vegetation; if the threat keeps coming it bolts on a zigzag line, often stopping to look back, and it may go to ground in an aardvark burrow. They are typically solitary. Sign includes small tracks and dung buried in scrapes.
