Embden Goose: Big White Meat Goose

The Embden is a large, fast-growing white goose kept mainly for meat, with a loud, watchful temperament that doubles as a farmyard alarm.

The Embden is one of the oldest and heaviest domestic goose breeds, tracing back to the Emden region of Germany and the neighbouring Netherlands. Homesteaders keep this pure-white, orange-billed bird for one main reason: it grows fast and finishes into a big meat carcass. It is also a capable watchdog, loud enough to announce every visitor.

Is it right for you?

Good for meat-minded keepers with pasture and cold winters. You need room, thick skin for a bossy gander, and neighbours who tolerate noise. Not a pet-first breed for small yards.

What you get

Meat is the payoff: Embdens grow quickly and reach roughly 15-20 lb (7-9 kg) live by autumn. Mature ganders hit 28-31 lb (13-14 kg), geese around 20 lb (9 kg). Eggs are secondary - about 20-40 large white eggs a year, mostly in spring.

Space & Housing

Give a dry, draught-free shelter and low fencing (a heavy goose rarely flies). Plan on generous pasture; they graze grass hard and love pond or tub water for bathing.

Feeding & Daily Care

Grass does much of the work in season, topped up with waterfowl or grain pellets and grit. Feed cost climbs in winter when pasture dies back. Fresh water daily is non-negotiable.

Temperament & Handling

Assertive and vocal, especially breeding ganders who guard fiercely. Calm handling from goslinghood helps, but expect some hissing and honking.

Health & Hardiness

Very cold-hardy; heat and lack of shade stress them more. For any health concern, consult a reputable breeder and a livestock veterinarian.

Getting Started

Start with 2-3 goslings from a known breeder. Sexing is easier by size or vent-check once grown.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating their size, skimping on water, and keeping an aggressive gander near children.

FAQ

Are Embdens good layers?

No - meat is their strength, at roughly 20-40 eggs yearly.

Are they aggressive?

Ganders can be, particularly in breeding season; calm early handling helps.
