The Bourbon Red is a heritage American turkey developed in Kentucky in the late 1800s, named for Bourbon County and its deep reddish-brown plumage with white wing and tail feathers. Homesteaders keep it for flavorful, slow-grown meat and because, unlike commercial broad-breasted birds, it can mate naturally and forage much of its own food.

Is it right for you?

Good for homesteaders with space to roam, patience for a slower bird, and a taste for old-fashioned flavor over sheer breast size. It handles cold and heat well and suits beginners who can build predator-proof housing.

What you get

Primarily meat: toms reach around 20-23 lbs live, hens around 12-14 lbs, at roughly 24-28 weeks - much slower than commercial turkeys. Hens also lay about 30-50 pale, speckled eggs a year, mostly in spring.

Space & Housing

Provide a dry, draft-free coop with high roosts, about 8-10 sq ft per bird inside, plus a fenced run or pasture. They fly well, so use 5-6 ft fencing and lock them up at night against foxes, raccoons, and owls.

Feeding & Daily Care

Feed a turkey or game-bird starter (around 28% protein for poults), then a grower. Adults forage grass and bugs, trimming the bill, but still need daily fresh water, grit, and topped-up feed. Expect higher costs than chickens.

Temperament & Handling

Calm, curious, and friendly, though toms get pushy in breeding season and will gobble. Hens make excellent broody mothers and are easy to handle.

Health & Hardiness

Hardy and cold-tolerant; keep poults warm and dry, and keep turkeys separate from chickens where you can. For any health concern, consult reputable heritage breeders and a livestock veterinarian.

Getting Started

Start with poults from a reputable heritage breeder. Keep a tom with several hens for breeding.

Common Mistakes

Expecting broad-breasted growth speed, skimping on protein for poults, and underbuilding fencing for birds that fly.

FAQ

Can Bourbon Reds breed naturally?

Yes. As a heritage breed they mate and reproduce on their own, so you can hatch your own poults.

Are they loud?

Fairly quiet overall, but toms gobble, especially in spring.
