Overview
The king eider is the most spectacular of the sea ducks and one of the great trophies of hardcore waterfowling, hunted in the coldest, most remote coastal waters of the far north. A drake king eider, with its ornate orange bill shield, is a bucket-list bird.
Identification & Appearance
Drakes are stunning, with a pale blue-gray crown, green cheeks, an orange knob and shield over a red bill, and a black-and-white body; hens are warm barred brown. The orange facial shield makes the drake unmistakable.
Range & Habitat
King eiders winter on cold Arctic and subarctic coasts and open sea, farther north than the common eider, diving deep for shellfish over offshore ledges.
Behavior & Sign
They raft and dive over shellfish beds in frigid water and trade low along the coast, decoying to big sea-duck spreads. They are powerful divers and very tough.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted in the sea-duck seasons of late fall and winter from layout boats and rock blinds in the far north.
Hunting Methods
Long lines of eider decoys off points and ledges, hunted from anchored layout boats in cold, often rough seas.
Gear & Optics
A hard-hitting 12-gauge with steel BB to T, a seaworthy boat, and serious cold-water safety gear - drysuit, PFD and warm layers.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Close, decisive shots on a tough bird, with quick recovery of divers in cold water. Breast the birds.
Meat & Eating Quality
Strong and fishy from a shellfish diet; usually breasted and cooked in ways that manage the flavor.
Common Mistakes
Going out in unsafe conditions and being unprepared for extreme cold.
Regulations & Conservation
Sea ducks have specific seasons and limits. Always confirm the current regulations and safety before hunting the far-north coasts. We do not give legal advice.
