Winter Wheat Plots
Winter wheat is the most forgiving seed in food plotting - cheap feed-store grain that greens any dirt by October, feeds deer all fall and again at spring green-up.
For the cost of a bag of feed-store seed wheat, any patch of scratched-up September dirt becomes a green October plot - which is why winter wheat is every plotter's safety net, nurse crop and budget answer. Deer graze the tender cereal from emergence to hard freeze and return the moment it resumes growth in March, bridging the exact gaps fancier plots leave.
Why deer love it
Young cereal grass is sweet, tender and up to 20% protein in fall; its spring regrowth is among the first green bites of the year.
When & how to plant
Early fall (Sept north/Oct south): broadcast 90-120 lb/ac on roughed dirt, drag or cultipack lightly - it forgives almost any seeding sin. Classic nurse crop over new clover.
Soil & pH
Grows nearly anywhere (5.5-7.0); modest nitrogen helps but even neglected wheat greens up.
Maintenance
None in fall; in spring either terminate ahead of a new planting or let it nurse the under-seeded clover through.
When it draws best
October-November green feeding, and the March-April green-up window; heads in summer feed turkeys and doves as a bonus.
