Hunting Benches
The flat shelf on an otherwise steep slope - benches give deer level bedding with wind above and view below, which is why mature ridge bucks live on them.
Walk a steep slope and suddenly the ground levels into a flat shelf ten to fifty meters wide, running along the contour - a bench. To a mature buck it's a penthouse: level ground to bed, the thermals and wind from above carrying scent of everything upslope, eyes covering everything below, and escape routes off either end. Benches on the leeward third of a ridge are where 'he's nocturnal' bucks actually spend their days.
What it is
A terrace of level or gently sloped ground interrupting a steep sidehill, from a one-deer flat to a shelf running hundreds of meters along the contour, often with the slope's best mast trees rooted on it.
Why game is here
Bedding physics: a bench lets a deer bed comfortably on a slope, with wind from above its back and sight below - the classic 'smell what I can't see, see what I can't smell' security setup. Leeward benches 1/3 down from the crest are the textbook mature-buck bedroom; benches also carry sidehill travel routes and hold acorn flats.
How to hunt it
Bedding benches: don't - hunt the DOWNWIND travel edges to and from, morning entries from below before light, and only push the bench itself as an endgame or in gun-drive strategies. Travel benches: stand on the downhill side of the trail at the bench's pinch points.
Playing the wind
Morning thermals pull scent UPslope (approach and hunt from below early); evening reverses it. A bench buck beds where the prevailing wind quarters over the crest - your access must come from the slope face his nose doesn't own.
Finding it on a map
Contours suddenly spreading apart mid-slope in an otherwise tight stack = bench. Follow a promising contour line along the whole ridge face; benches chain. Leeward-of-prevailing-wind faces first, then confirm with one careful off-season walk for beds and rubs.
Common mistakes
Walking the bench itself to scout in-season (you just evicted him), hunting it on morning thermals from above, treating every bench as bedding (mast benches are feed - different hours), and ignoring the micro-benches only boots find - the map shows the big ones; the deer often prefer the subtle ones.
