Overview
Ross's goose is a diminutive white goose, essentially a miniature snow goose, that mixes into the great white-goose flocks of the Central and Pacific flyways. Small, delicate and excellent eating, it is a favorite bonus bird of spring and winter goose hunts.
Identification & Appearance
Ross's are small, all-white geese with black wingtips, a short neck and a stubby bill lacking the snow goose's black "grin patch." They look like petite snow geese and are told apart by size and the cleaner bill.
Range & Habitat
They breed in the central Arctic and winter in the agricultural valleys and marshes of California, the Gulf Coast and the Central Flyway, feeding in grain fields and shallow wetlands.
Behavior & Sign
Ross's flock with snow geese in huge, wary rafts and feed in fields by the thousands. Big flocks are famously hard to decoy without large spreads.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted in regular and special white-goose (light goose) seasons, including spring conservation orders in many states, over fields and roosts.
Hunting Methods
Large spreads of white-goose decoys, e-callers where legal in the conservation season, and field layouts under the flight lines.
Gear & Optics
A 12-gauge with steel #2 to BB, huge decoy spreads, and layout blinds. Spring light-goose seasons often allow extended magazines and e-callers - check the rules.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Pick single birds out of the flock over the decoys and cool them promptly. They pluck and roast beautifully.
Meat & Eating Quality
Ross's geese are grain-fed and small, and are among the best-eating light geese - tender and mild.
Common Mistakes
Skimping on decoy numbers for a species that flocks in the thousands, and misidentifying Ross's versus snow geese for records.
Regulations & Conservation
Light-goose populations are managed with liberal and conservation-order seasons. Rules differ sharply from regular seasons - always confirm current federal and state light-goose regulations before hunting. We do not give legal advice.
