Overview
The common eider is the largest duck in North America and the premier trophy of northern sea-duck hunting. Big, hardy drakes are hunted from rocks and layout boats in cold northern waters, a demanding pursuit that rewards the well-prepared and well-dressed hunter.
Identification & Appearance
Drakes are boldly patterned in white above and black below with a green nape and a sloping wedge-shaped bill; hens are barred brown. They are heavy, powerful ducks that fly low and fast over the swells.
Range & Habitat
Common eiders winter along rocky northern coasts - New England, the Canadian Maritimes and Alaska - diving for mussels and crustaceans on cold offshore ledges.
Behavior & Sign
Eiders raft in large flocks over mussel beds and trade low along the coast, decoying to big spreads of sea-duck blocks. They are strong divers and tough birds.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted in the sea-duck seasons of late fall and winter, from rocks, islands and layout boats in cold, often rough water.
Hunting Methods
Long lines of sea-duck decoys off points and ledges, hunted from anchored layout boats or rock blinds. This is serious cold-water boat hunting.
Gear & Optics
A hard-hitting 12-gauge with steel BB to #2, a seaworthy boat, and cold-water safety gear - drysuit or waders, PFD and warm layers. Weather judgment is part of the hunt.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Take close shots as birds commit; eiders are tough and dropped birds must be recovered quickly in cold water. Breast them and skin off the tough skin.
Meat & Eating Quality
Sea ducks are strong and fishy from a shellfish diet; eiders are usually breasted, soaked and cooked in ways that manage the flavor rather than treated as mild table birds.
Common Mistakes
Going out in unsafe water, undergunning a tough bird, and being unprepared for the cold.
Regulations & Conservation
Sea ducks have specific seasons and limits within the migratory framework. Always confirm the current regulations and safety rules before heading offshore; conditions and limits vary by state and year. We do not give legal advice.
