Overview
Brant are small, fast sea geese hunted along both US coasts, prized by waterfowlers for their coastal-only range, their tricky decoying and their reputation as one of the finest-eating geese. A limit of brant is a saltwater specialty earned in cold, open bays.
Identification & Appearance
Brant are compact, dark geese with a black head, neck and chest, a small white necklace, and a bright white rear that flashes in flight. They are noticeably smaller than a Canada goose and fly in low, shifting lines over the water.
Range & Habitat
Atlantic brant winter in coastal bays from New England to the mid-Atlantic; Pacific (black) brant winter along the West Coast. Both are tied to saltwater, eelgrass and sea lettuce.
Behavior & Sign
Brant raft on open water and feed on eelgrass on the tides, flying in low, bunched flocks that follow the shoreline. They decoy well to the right spread but flare from anything wrong.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted in the coastal waterfowl seasons of late fall and winter, on the tides when birds trade between rafts and eelgrass flats.
Hunting Methods
Layout boats, shoreline blinds and floating spreads over open bays; a realistic brant decoy spread and a low, hidden hunter are the keys. Tide timing is everything.
Gear & Optics
A 12-gauge with steel #2 to #4, a boat or layout rig, and serious cold-water and safety gear - waders, PFD and warm layers. Brant hunting is open-water hunting.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Take clean, close shots over the decoys and let birds work; cool them promptly. Pluck or breast them and keep the fat.
Meat & Eating Quality
Brant that feed on eelgrass are rated among the best-eating of all wild geese - mild, tender and clean.
Common Mistakes
Ignoring the tide, poor concealment on open water, and skimping on safety gear in cold coastal conditions.
Regulations & Conservation
Brant have their own seasons and bag limits under the migratory-bird framework, sometimes with special quotas. Always check the current federal and state regulations before hunting; seasons and limits change year to year. We do not give legal advice.
FAQ
Are brant hard to decoy? They can be finicky; the right spread and hidden hunter matter.
