Overview
Burchell's zebra is a staple plains-game animal, prized for its striking striped hide and challenging as a surprisingly tough, wary quarry. A zebra rug or wall hide is one of the most recognizable trophies from an African safari.
Identification & Appearance
Zebra are horse-sized with bold black-and-white stripes, a stiff upright mane and, in Burchell's, faint brown "shadow" stripes between the black. Stallions are slightly larger and thicker-necked than mares.
Range & Habitat
They range across the grassland and open savanna of eastern and southern Africa, often in mixed herds with wildebeest, and are always near water and grazing.
Behavior & Sign
Zebra are herd animals with excellent eyesight and a nervous, alert nature; they mill and circle rather than stand for a shot. Sign includes cropped grass, dust wallows and horse-like tracks and droppings.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted on the dry-season plains-game calendar, roughly April through October, when herds concentrate near remaining water.
Hunting Methods
Spot-and-stalk into grazing herds is the norm, picking a lone or edge animal and waiting for a clear broadside. Patience is key - zebra rarely give an easy first look.
Gear & Optics
Zebra are tougher than they look; a .30 caliber and up with premium bonded bullets is recommended. Good binoculars and steady sticks help sort an animal out of a milling herd.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Place the bullet on the shoulder crease into the heart-lung area; avoid the tempting but risky neck. The hide is the main trophy, so careful skinning and salting are essential.
Meat & Eating Quality
Zebra meat is dense and somewhat sweet, widely eaten in camp and by staff, and often used for predator bait as well.
Common Mistakes
Shooting into a bunched herd, misjudging distance on open plains, and underestimating how much lead a zebra can carry are the usual mistakes.
Regulations & Conservation
Zebra are hunted under standard plains-game quotas; regulated hunting supports conservancies across their range. Confirm CITES and import paperwork for the hide. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
