Overview
The springbok is South Africa's national animal and one of the most popular open-plains hunts on the continent. Fast, sharp-eyed and hunted across vast Karoo flats, it offers long shots, spot-and-stalk challenge and outstanding eating.
Identification & Appearance
Springbok are small gazelles, cinnamon above and white below with a bold dark side-stripe, and a fold of white hair on the back they "pronk" open when alarmed. Both sexes carry lyre-shaped horns, heavier on rams.
Range & Habitat
They occupy the open, arid grassland and Karoo scrub of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana, thriving in dry country with sparse cover.
Behavior & Sign
Springbok move in herds across open ground, rely on speed and eyesight, and famously "pronk" - bounding stiff-legged - when startled. Sign is cropped grass and small tracks on the flats.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted year-round on many properties, with the cooler dry-season months most comfortable and productive for the long walks involved.
Hunting Methods
Open-country spot-and-stalk, using terrain folds to close within range, and occasionally longer shots across the flats where cover runs out.
Gear & Optics
A flat-shooting rifle in .243 to .270 with a good variable scope suits the open ground and longer shots. Quality binoculars and a rangefinder are essential.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Broadside, aim tight behind the shoulder; springbok are small and not tough. The whole cape makes a beautiful mount and the hide is often kept.
Meat & Eating Quality
Springbok is superb - tender, sweet and among the very best-eating plains game, prized for biltong and the grill.
Common Mistakes
Misjudging distance on featureless flats and skylining yourself on the open ground and spooking the herd.
Regulations & Conservation
Abundant and hunted under standard licensing; culling and management hunts are common. Confirm import rules. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
