Overview
The nyala is a strikingly handsome spiral-horned antelope of southeastern Africa and a coveted plains-game trophy. Bulls are dramatically different from the ewes - slate-gray, shaggy and lyre-horned - which makes for a beautiful and demanding hunt in thick cover.
Identification & Appearance
Bulls are charcoal-gray with a long fringe of hair along the belly, a crest down the spine, white facial and body markings, and yellow-legged spiral horns. Ewes and young are bright chestnut with vertical white stripes and no horns.
Range & Habitat
Nyala favor dense riverine thickets and dry woodland in KwaZulu-Natal, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and eastern South Africa, seldom moving far from cover and water.
Behavior & Sign
Shy and secretive, nyala slip through thick brush and feed at the edges of clearings early and late. Sign includes tracks along thicket edges, browsed shrubs and dung middens.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted on the dry-season plains-game calendar, roughly April through September, with the best chances in the low light of dawn and dusk when bulls step into openings.
Hunting Methods
Spot-and-stalk along thicket edges and ambushes near feeding openings or water are both effective. Because cover is thick, shots are often quick and close.
Gear & Optics
A flat-shooting medium rifle in .270 to .30 caliber suits the moderate ranges. Quality low-light binoculars matter for dawn and dusk hunting in shadowed cover.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Take the broadside lung shot behind the shoulder; nyala are moderately sized and not especially tough. The full cape and horns make a superb shoulder mount.
Meat & Eating Quality
Nyala venison is fine-grained and mild, considered some of the better-eating plains game.
Common Mistakes
Misjudging a young bull for a mature one, shooting into brush, and moving too fast through thick cover that holds bedded animals.
Regulations & Conservation
Nyala are common where they occur and hunted under normal plains-game licensing. Confirm import rules for the cape and horns. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
