Overview
The grey, or common, duiker is a small bush-loving antelope found across most of sub-Saharan Africa, often hunted at dusk and by lamplight where legal, and a classic "tiny ten" trophy. Secretive and adaptable, it turns up in almost any cover.
Identification & Appearance
Grey duikers are grizzled grayish-brown with a dark facial blaze, a tuft of hair between the ears, and short straight spike horns on the rams. They have an arched, ducking posture that gives duikers their name.
Range & Habitat
They occupy bush, woodland, scrub and even farmland across most of sub-Saharan Africa, favoring areas with dense low cover.
Behavior & Sign
Duikers are solitary, mostly active at dawn, dusk and night, and dive into cover when alarmed. Sign includes browsed shrubs, small tracks and beds in thick brush.
Hunting Seasons & Timing
Hunted on the plains-game calendar, with the best chances in low light when they feed at the edges of cover.
Hunting Methods
Still-hunting and glassing bush edges at dawn and dusk, and ambushing feeding lanes; quick close shots are the rule.
Gear & Optics
A handy rifle in .22 centerfire to .243, or a shotgun in cover, suits the close, fast shots. Bright glass helps in shadowed brush.
Shot Placement & Field Care
Take the broadside shot when the ram clears the brush; the full cape or European mount suits a small trophy.
Meat & Eating Quality
Duiker venison is tender and mild, rated among the best-eating of the small antelopes.
Common Mistakes
Shooting into brush and hunting the middle of the day when they are bedded.
Regulations & Conservation
Abundant and hunted under standard licensing. Confirm import rules. This is a reading guide, not legal advice.
