Winter Pea Plots

Austrian winter peas are the sweetest legume in plotting - deer prefer them over almost everything green - which is why they live in blends: alone, they're grazed to extinction.

Winter peas are the crop that proves preference: in cafeteria-style test plots, deer walk through wheat, clover and brassicas to eat the peas first. Sweet, tender, high-protein vines - and so preferred that a pure pea plot in real deer density is a bare-dirt memory by October. The professional move: blend them into cereal plots as the candy that pulls deer in while the grains sustain the plot.

Why deer love it

Sugar-sweet succulent vines at 20-25% protein - repeatedly the #1 preferred forage in side-by-side trials.

When & how to plant

Early fall, 30-50 lb/ac WITHIN a wheat/rye/oat blend (the cereals physically shelter the peas); inoculate on new ground, cover 1/2-1".

Soil & pH

pH 6.0-7.0, average fertility; nothing exotic.

Maintenance

None - they're a fall sprint teammate; in the south they overwinter for a spring encore.

When it draws best

September-November, precisely the archery-and-rut window - the peas are why deer choose YOUR cereal plot over the neighbor's.

Common mistakes

  • Planting peas alone in high deer density (instant total consumption)
  • Skipping inoculant
  • Overpaying for 'magic bean' bags that are mostly... winter peas and wheat - blend your own

🌦️ Planting dates and varieties shift with your zone and rainfall - your county extension office gives free localized advice and cheap soil tests. Also note: rules on hunting over planted plots vs 'baiting' differ by state - plots are legal most places, bait often isn't; confirm your regulations. We don't give legal advice.
