Full-Body Goose Decoys
Flocked heads, true postures and motion bases make full-bodies the realism gold standard of field goose hunting - at a price in money, trailer space and setup labor.
Watch educated late-season Canadas circle a field: the flocks that finish are almost always working full-body spreads. A modern full-body - correct body mass, flocked no-shine head, feeding/resting/sentry postures, motion base rocking in the wind - is as close to a real goose as plastic gets, and geese vote with their feet. The costs are equally real: serious money per dozen, a trailer to move any number, and cold dawn labor to deploy them right.
What it is
Life-sized three-dimensional goose imitations on ground stakes or rocker/motion bases, in posture families (feeders head-down, active walkers, resters on tucked legs, upright sentries) with flocked (velvet-textured, glare-free) heads and often bodies.
When it wins
Field hunting geese - period - and hardest when it matters most: late-season educated birds, bluebird high-pressure days, close-range A-frame and layout-blind hunts where geese get a long, low look at everything.
Rigging & setup
Motion bases on at least half (wind rock = life), stakes seated firm for frozen ground (carry a spud), heads snapped on at varied angles, and mud/frost wiped off - shine is the enemy. Transport in slotted bags or racked trailers; crushed flocking is money burned.
Running it on the hunt
Deploy in family groups of 5-12 with lanes between, feeders dominating (70%+), sentries few and placed at the spread's edges - geese read too many upright heads as alarm. Blinds hide IN the spread upwind of the landing hole; re-shape as wind shifts, always keeping the hole into wind at gun range.
Numbers & placement
Quality-over-quantity is the full-body creed: 2-4 dozen well-postured full-bodies beat 15 dozen rags on educated birds. Early season family flocks: even 12-18 works. The classic shapes (U, J, horseshoe) all reduce to one rule: mass upwind and to the sides, open landing pocket downwind-center in front of the guns.
Common mistakes
Sentry-heavy spreads (the flock looks nervous), perfect rows instead of feeding chaos, glare off unflocked plastic on sunny snow, hiding the blinds OUTSIDE the spread (geese land looking at them), and buying two dozen then skipping the trailer math - full-bodies you can't transport hunt zero days a season.
