Squirrel Call

Squirrel calling is the calling apprenticeship nobody skips knowingly: cheap gear, generous targets, instant feedback. A bellows call barked against a hickory trunk makes territorial fox squirrels bark back and give away their limb; a distress squeal freezes the woods, then fills it with curious, scolding gray squirrels. Every skill that later kills turkeys and elk - cadence, patience, reading answers - gets its first honest test here.

What it is & the sound

Two tools: the rubber bellows call (squeeze-puffs make the 'chuck-chuck-chuck' bark and chatter) and the distress whistle or cutter (the young-squirrel squeal plus paddle-slapped leaves for the hawk-attack scene).

When & where it works

Fall hardwoods full of cutting sign (fresh nut shavings under hickories and oaks) - calm mornings when sound carries. Barking works all day on territorial fox squirrels; the distress scene shines when the woods have gone quiet after your first shot.

How to run it

Barking: 3-5 bellows chucks, listen - an answering bark marks a squirrel that will usually show itself within minutes. Distress: thrash leaves with the paddle while squealing 10-15 seconds, then sit STILL five minutes - heads pop out of every den hole to see the drama.

Choosing one

A bellows call and a cutter/whistle combo costs less than a box of shells; some hunters just clack two quarters or their pocketknife against a stick for cutting sounds. This is the least gear-sensitive calling there is.

Practice drills

Copy a real squirrel's bark cadence in the yard - the stuttered 'chuck-chuck-chuuck' rhythm and the tail-flick energy behind it. Drill the freeze: calling means nothing if you can't sit motionless through the five silent minutes after.

Common mistakes

Calling while walking (squirrels pinpoint you and flatten on a limb), quitting the distress scene after one minute (curiosity takes five), and over-barking a squirrel that already answered - he's coming; be quiet and watch the treetops.
