.243 Winchester

No cartridge has started more deer hunters than the .243 Winchester, and the recipe hasn't aged: a 6mm bullet fast enough to shoot flat, heavy enough (90-105gr) to kill whitetails and antelope cleanly, and gentle enough (~9 ft-lb recoil - half a .308) that a 12-year-old or a recoil-sensitive adult shoots it WELL. Shooting well is what fills tags.

What it is

The .308 case necked to 6mm (1955) - the original do-both cartridge: varmint speed with light big-game weight.

What it hunts best

Deer and pronghorn as the headline; hogs, and 55-75gr varmint work as the second career. It's legal for deer essentially everywhere centerfires are (a few caliber-minimum exceptions exist - verify locally). Shot placement discipline matters more as game grows: it's a precision cartridge, not a hammer.

Trajectory & energy

A 95gr at ~3,100 zeroed at 200 drops ~7" at 300 - flat enough to simplify a young hunter's math. ~1,950 ft-lb muzzle; carries 1,000+ ft-lb past 300.
