A turkey presents archery's cruelest target: baseball-sized vitals buried in a feather-balloon that soaks arrows and walks away from marginal hits. Turkey heads answer with extremes - oversized mechanicals (2 inch+ cuts) that turn body shots survivable-margin into anchored bird, and the wild-looking head/neck specialists (wide crossing blades or loops) built to be aimed at the wattles for instant results or clean misses, nothing between. Know both, pick per your setup and shot discipline.
What it is
Two schools: heavyweight wide-cut mechanicals aimed at body vitals (heart/lung cluster low in the drumstick-line), and decapitation-class heads (guillotine-style crossing blades, wire loops) aimed exclusively at the head and neck.
How it works
Body school: maximum cut width compensates for the tiny vital cluster - a 2-inch channel forgives an inch of error and anchors birds that a narrow head lets fly-hop away. Head school: hit = instant, miss = clean; feathers are never even touched.
Strengths
Purpose-fit lethality both ways - big mechanicals anchor bodies; head-shot specialists eliminate the wounded-bird outcome entirely (their whole sales pitch and it's true). Blunt truth: either beats a deer head through a gobbler's breast sponge.
Trade-offs
Body shots on turkeys demand knowing the weird anatomy (aim points shift with strut posture); head-shot heads need dead-calm 20 m-and-under discipline and often fly like lawn chairs past that; big mechanicals want adequate energy as always.
Tuning & practice
Practice on 3D turkey targets in BOTH postures (strut compresses vitals lower and forward - aim the wing butt crease broadside, the base of the beard frontal). Verify the actual head's flight; guillotine-types especially need their own zero and a hard personal range limit.
Common mistakes
Deer-broadhead-and-hope (the classic flown-away bird), aiming mid-body at a strutting tom (all feathers, no turkey), taking head shots past the head's honest range, and skipping the follow-through plan - even well-hit birds flop 50 m; watch, mark, move fast.
