Single-Bevel Broadheads

The single-bevel broadhead is the spearpoint of a whole philosophy: grind the edge on one side only and the head ROTATES as it penetrates, levering through bone that stops symmetric edges dead. Paired - as its adherents insist - with heavy arrows, high FOC and cut-on-contact geometry, it produces the deep-penetration, big-bone-defeating system popularized by studies of buffalo-class game and adopted by whitetail traditionalists who simply never want to hit a shoulder and wonder.
What it is
A (usually) two-blade cut-on-contact head with each edge beveled on ONE face (25° class), typically in heavier weights (150-300 grains), often paired with steel adapters and Ashby-inspired arrow builds.
How it works
Asymmetric bevels turn penetration force into rotation - the head screws through tissue and, on bone contact, the rotating wedge splits rather than slaps. Matched-rotation (right-bevel head with right-helical fletch) keeps arrow and head spinning together.
Strengths
The best hard-bone performance in archery, extreme penetration per grain of energy (the low-poundage and trad shooter's friend), simple strong one-piece builds, and edges a stone restores forever.
Trade-offs
Narrow two-blade wounds mean blood trails rely on depth and exit, not width; the system rewards (near demands) heavy-arrow builds that drop trajectory speed; sharpening single bevels correctly is a learned skill; and the full philosophy is a rabbit hole with opinions at the bottom.
Tuning & practice
Build the arrow around the head: 15%+ FOC, total arrow weight per your energy, bevel direction matched to fletching helical. Tune, then practice at hunting ranges accepting the loopier trajectory - this is a system, not a screw-on accessory.
Common mistakes
Screwing one onto a light speed-arrow and expecting the legend (the head is half a system), mismatched bevel/helical fighting each other's rotation, wrong-technique sharpening that rounds the single edge, and taking the bone-defeating myth as license for bad shot selection - it improves outcomes, it doesn't excuse choices.
