An arrow doesn't leave a bow straight - it flexes around the riser (or off the string) in a controlled whip called archer's paradox, and SPINE is the measure of how much it resists that flex. Match spine to your draw weight, arrow length and point weight and arrows recover into laser flight; mismatch it and no sight, rest or excuse will group them. Shaft material, straightness grades and weight all matter - but spine is the number that rules, and the charts exist because guessing fails.
What it is
The shaft itself: carbon (dominant - durable, consistent, light-to-heavy options), aluminum (precise, affordable, bends), and hybrids. 'Spine' (e.g. 500, 400, 340 - LOWER number = STIFFER) measures deflection under standard load; 'straightness' grades (.006 to .001) price consistency.
How it works
At the shot, the shaft flexes then oscillates and recovers - correct spine times that recovery so the arrow clears the bow straightening; too weak whips wide (usually tail-left for RH), too stiff kicks the other way. Length and point weight modify effective spine: longer/heavier-tipped = weaker acting.
Strengths
Getting spine right transforms a bow: broadheads suddenly group with field points, tuning stops fighting you, and forgiveness rises across the board. Modern carbon adds durability aluminum never had - flex it, check it, shoot it for years.
Trade-offs
Charts are starting points, not gospel (fast cams and long draws shift needs stiffer); premium straightness costs real money for margins only long-range shooters cash; and cutting arrows changes spine - the build is a system, changed anywhere, changed everywhere.
Tuning & practice
Start from the maker's spine chart with your draw weight, ARROW length (not draw length) and point weight; fine-verify by paper or bare-shaft tuning. Weigh and spin every shaft in a set; cull the outlier. Carbon safety ritual: after any hard impact, flex-and-listen before reshooting - a cracked carbon shaft can splinter on release.
Common mistakes
Buying by 'my draw weight' alone while ignoring point weight and length, shooting mixed-spine leftovers and blaming form, skipping the flex-check on carbon (the one genuinely dangerous arrow mistake), and chasing gear when a $0 spine consult of the chart would fix the group.
